The Youngstown State men's tennis team opens the dual portion of its season on Friday against St. Bonaventure. First serve at the Western Reserve Tennis Center is set for 5 p.m. The Penguins are also in action on Sunday when they visit Duquesne.

Sunday's contest against Duquesne is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club of Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are coming off a 12-11 campaign that saw them advance to the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships. YSU returns Danylo Veremeichuk, Yossi Dahan, Joao Garretto, Vasilis Vardakis, Luke Purser and Pol Virgili Blanco from last year's squad. Veremeichuk leads the team with 45 career victories while Garretto has 39. Both players have combined for 90 doubles wins (50 by Garretto and 40 by Veremeichuk).

YSU has won 31 dual matches the past two seasons and had consecutive 12-win campaigns for the first time since the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. The Penguins won a school record 19 matches in 2016-17.

Series Notes:

  • The Penguins have won seven straight matches against St. Bonaventure, including a 7-0 victory last February.
  • YSU has won two of the past three vs. Duquesne, but dropped a 4-3 contest to the Dukes last January. The Penguins' last win at Duquesne was on Jan. 29, 2016.
