2018-19 Men's Tennis Season In Review

The Youngstown State men's tennis team reached the Horizon League semifinals and won five conference matches for the third consecutive year. YSU had a bye to the semis for the first time in school history.

Here is a list of accomplishments for the program this season:

  • YSU was 12-8 overall, the third straight campaign it had a winning record. It was the first time in school history the Penguins have had three consecutive winning seasons.
  • The 43 victories the past three years are the most in a three-season span in school history.
  • The Penguins finished in sole possession of second place in the Horizon League regular-season standings for the first-time ever with a 5-1 mark.
  • YSU won league matches against Northern Kentucky, IUPUI, Green Bay, Wright State and UIC.
  • The Penguins had three seniors on the 2018-19 roster - Yossi Dahan, Luke Purser and Danylo Veremeichuk
  • YSU has reached the semifinals of the league championships in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2014.
  • YSU was 61-56 in dual singles matches and 30-25 in dual doubles matches. 
  • In Horizon League play, YSU was 23-13 in singles matches and 12-3 in doubles matches.
  • Veremeichuk was a first-team All-Horizon League selection for the second straight year while Vasilis Vardakis was a second-team honoree.
  • Five players won at least 12 singles matches - Veremeichuk (22), Erik Gran (18), Vardakis (14), Purser (12) and Dahan (12).
  • Three players won 10 dual matches - Veremeichuk (12), Gran (11) and Garretto (10).
  • Garretto, Gran and Veremeichuk went 5-1 in HL play while Vardakis was 4-1.
  • YSU won at least 10 matches in five of six spots in the lineup.
  • In doubles, Veremeichuk and Garretto went 11-7 at No. 1. Purser and Vardakis went 7-7 at No. 2 and Dahan and Pol Virgili Blanco went 7-7 at No. 3.
  • In league doubles matches YSU was 4-1 at No. 1, 3-1 at No. 2 and 5-1 at No. 3.
  • Veremichuk's final career singles record was 57-26 and in doubles was 52-24. He capped off his singles career on a five-match winning streak.
  • Dahan's posted 52 career wins in singles and 40 victories in doubles.
  • Purser's finished his singles career with 39 singles wins and 34 doubles victories. He capped off his career with a dramatic three-set win vs. UIC at the HL semifinals.
  • Veremeichuk ranked fourth in school history in singles wins and third in doubles wins.
  • Dahan ranked sixth in school history in singles wins and fourth in doubles victories.
  • Purser ranked 12th in school history in singles victories and ninth in doubles win.
  • The Penguins played matches in Illinois, Indiana, New York, Florida, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
