The Youngstown State softball team is gearing up for two critical Horizon League match ups this week when it visits Detroit, April 18-19, and hosts Wright State, April 21-22, in a pair of three-game series. The Guins are currently tied for sixth place with Wright State and Cleveland State but are just one game out of third.
The Guins and Titans will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 18, at 3 p.m. and a single game on Thursday, April 19, at 3 p.m.
First pitch for the YSU-Wright State doubleheader on Saturday, April 21, is set for 1 p.m. and the single game on Sunday, April 22, is slated to start at Noon.
The Titans are currently 10-28 overall and 2-9 in the Horizon League. The Titans are led by Sara Cupp with a .345 batting average, nine home runs and 30 RBIs. Julia Maksym leads the pitching staff with a 5-13 record and has 39 strikeouts. Karyn McCarty leads the team with 44 strikeouts in 87.2 innings pitched.
The Detroit Series
The Penguins and Titans have met 26 times previous and the Guins own a 14-11-1 advantage in the all-time series.
About Wright State
Wright State is currently 17-23 overall and owns a 5-7 mark in the Horizon League. Leading the Raiders is Kristi Boreing with a .316 batting average. Colleen Schneider has a .309 batting average and three of the Raiders' eight home runs on the season. Krystian DeWitt leads the pitching staff with an 11-20 record and a 3.17 earned-run average. She also has 158 strikeouts in 198.2 innings pitched.
The Wright State Series
The Guins and Raiders have met 57 times before and the Raiders own a 30-26-1 edge in the all-time series.
Senior Haley Thomas became just the third player in school history to record at least 200 hits in a career last week. Now, Thomas, who has 211 career hits, now ranks second all-time and needs 21 more to break the school record of 231 held by Associate Head Coach Tiffaney Patteson (2003-06).
Ingalls' Second Century
Last weekend, senior Jordan Ingalls became just the fourth YSU player to record at least 200 hits in a career. Ingalls currently ranks fourth with 203 and needs six more to move into third place past Amanda Berry (208, 2001-04)
Crozier Climbing Strikeout Chart
Sophomore Casey Crozier is closing in on the 200 career strikeout mark. Crozier already ranks sixth all-time 185 career strikeouts and needs just 15 more to become the sixth pitcher in YSU history to post 200 whiffs.
Junior Vicky Rumph continues to put up outstanding offensive numbers for the Guins. Rumph is third on the team with a .365 batting average with 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 24 runs batted in. Rumph also owns a .329 career batting average with 15 career home runs and 80 career RBIs.
Guins Challenging Runs Record
Thirty-four games into the season, the Guins have scored 176 runs for an average of 5.7 runs per game. Their 191 runs already ranks as the fifth-highest total in school history and they need just four more to move into fourth place. They also need 27 more to break the school record of 220 runs scored in 2003.
It's Always Sunny in Philly
Senior Kristen Philen is turning in a standout final campaign and has been a tough out for Horizon League foes. Overall, Philen his batting .319 with four home runs and 22 runs scored. Against the league, Philen is carrying a .389 batting average with two home runs and 12 runs scored.
Gabel Groovin in the Clutch
Junior Sarah Gabel seems to enjoy batting in clutch situations this season. Gabel owns a season batting average .347 with 15 runs batted in. However, Gabel has been excelling when the Guins need production. She is batting .343 with runners on base, .800 with the bases loaded, .417 with runners in scoring position and .600 with a runner on third and less than two outs. Also, of her 15 RBIs, eight have come with two outs.
