Three-Games Series at UNCW, Coppin State Tourney On Deck For Softball

The Youngstown State softball team gears up for a challenging slate with seven games in five days when it visits UNC-Wilmington and plays in the Coppin State Tournament.

The Penguins and Seahawks play a three-game series, March 11-12. The series begins with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11, at 3 p.m. The teams will play a single game on Wednesday, March 12, at 1 p.m.

The Penguins will play four games in two days in Baltimore at the Coppin State Tournament, March 14-15. YSU faces UMass-Lowell and Mount St. Mary's on March 14, at 3:30 p.m. and 5:45, respectively.

On Friday, the Penguins take on LaSalle and Coppin State at 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., respectively.

About UNC-Wilmington
The Seahawks enter the three-game series with an 11-8 record, including a 9-3 mark at home. Brittany Gamby leads the team with a .404 batting average and 14 runs scored. Nella Chamblee boasts a batting averge of .356 with 14 runs batted in. Pitcher Casey Rowland leads the staff with a 5-3 record and a 2.24 earned-run average. Peyton Jordan also have five victories.

"New" Home Opener
The Penguins are slated to play their home at the new on-campus YSU Softball Complex, Tuesday, March 18, in a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m.

Campbell Approaching Milestones
Youngstown State Head Coach Brian Campbell is approaching two coaching milestones. Campbell has 383 career victories and needs 17 more to earn 400. He also has 98 victories at Youngstown State and needs two more post his 100th at the school.

Crozier Gets K's Mark, Nears Win Record
With 44 strikeouts this season, senior Casey Crozier is Youngstown State's all-time strikeout leader with 413 career strikeouts. She is the first Youngstown STate pitcher to record 400 career strikeouts. Crozier also has 45 career victories and ranks second on the all-time wins list. She needs one win more to tie the record and two more to break the record of 46 set by Kim Givens frm 1993-96.

Castiglione Rollin'
Sophomore Miranda Castiglione has been a tough out this season. Castiglione leads the team with a .439 batting average, 12 runs scored, three home runs and tied for the second on the team with seven runs batted in. She is slugging at a .683 clip and owns an on-base percentage of .452.

Dowd Digs the Long Ball
Freshman Sarah Dowd was quickly made her mark in the Penguins lineup. Of her seven hits, two have been home runs. Dowd has actually hit three balls over the fence, but was credited with a single after passing a baserunner. Dowd leads the team with nine RBIs, including a four-RBI performance against Winthrop on March 8.

Knight and Day
Senior Haley Knight is off to the best start of her career. Knight is batting .355 with three doubles and five runs batted in. Knight currently has 11 hits, compared to six all of last season. She had a combined total of 14 between 2012 and 2013.
