The Youngstown State softball team continues its homestand with a non-league doubleheader, today, against Dayton. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
Last Time Out
The Penguins secure a 3-2 come-from-behind, extra-inning win over Wright State on Senior Day on April 19. Senior Samantha Snodgrass's bases-loaded fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning scored sophomore Miranda Castiglione with the game-winning run.
Brian Campbell Nearing 400th Career Victory
Head Coach Brian Campbell, who has 399 wins, needs just one to reach 400 for his career. His career mark is 399-298-2 in 14 years. His six-year record at YSU is 119-170-1. The Penguins have also won 92 games since the start of the 2011 season.
Keep 'Em Close
The Penguins continue to succeed in tight ball games, posting a 16-8 record in games decided by two-runs-or-less. The Penguins are 11-3 in one-run games and 5-5 in two-run contests.
Miranda Castiglione continues her impressive sophomore campaign with a .391 batting average, six home runs and 22 runs batted in. Castiglione leads the Horizon League with 52 hits, 35 runs scored and 80 total bases, ranks fourth in batting average and a .449 on-base percentage, and fifth with a .602 slugging percentage.
The Crozier 500
Senior Casey Crozier, who leads the team with a 13-6 record and a 2.39 earned-run average, recorded her 500th career strikeout last weekend and became the first YSU pitcher to post at least 50 career wins and 500 career strikeouts. Crozier has 54 wins and 515 strikeouts. Crozier is climbing the single-season strikeout chart this season as well. She has 146 strikeouts this season and ranks second. She posted 145 in 2013. The single-season record of 179 was set by Kelly Murphy in 2003.
Need To Lead After Four
If the Penguins can get through the fourth inning with the lead, there is a good chance they will come out victorious. The Penguins own an 13-2 record when leading after four innings, an 13-0 mark when leading after five and a 14-1 record when leading after six.
Senior Courtney Ewing owned the Penguins longest hitting streak this season at 18 games from March 11 through April 6. She has now hit safely in 27 of the last 29 games and carries a batting average a .357 (35-for-98) during that span.
Dayton (19-25) is coming off a split doubleheader Friday at St. Bonaventure, dropping the first game 5-4 and taking the second game 3-0. The Flyers are one win away from a 20-win season which would mark head coach Cara LaPlaca's fifth over the last seven seasons. UD is currently in seventh place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings, one spot out of qualifying for the league's post-season tournament.
Senior Alysha Isaacson leads the team with a .429 average at the plate and would lead the league but her 2.45 at bats/game doesn't meet minimum hitting requirements (2.5). Junior Tiffany Ricks has tallied a team-best 55 hits while also leading the team with 35 runs, 34 RBI, nine home runs and 93 total bases. Senior Kasi Vazquez has knocked out eight home runs and has taken a team-leading 25 bases on balls and has been hit seven times. In the circle, sophomore Emily Froment holds the team's low ERA at 4.47 while senior Kayla English has recorded a team-best 102 strikeouts.
The Dayton Series
Youngstown State and Dayton have previously met 11 times with the Penguins holding the slight 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. The two squads last met in 2010 for a doubleheader at the Flyers' UD Softball Stadium with Dayton coming away with two wins over Youngstown State.
