The Youngstown State softball team closes out the 2014 regular season with a three-game series at Horizon League member Detroit, May 3-4. First pitch on Saturday is slated for Noon. Sunday's single game is set for a Noon start.

The Penguins (26-22, 8-8 Horizon League) are coming off an 8-6 loss in the series finale against Horizon League foe Oakland on April 27. The Penguins won the first game against the Golden Grizzlies, 4-2, and lost game two, 3-0.

The Titans, who play Oakland in a rescheduled doubleheader, May 2, are 5-39 overall and 1-13 in the Horizon League. Kayla Kostich leads the Titans with a .336 batting average while Christa McGahuey leads the team and ranks third in the Horizon League with eight home runs. McGahuey is also batting .299.

Youngstown State and Detroit have met 32 times previously and the Penguins own a 19-12-1 record in the all-time series. Last season, the Penguins won the season series against the Titans and have won 10 of the last 11 contests.

Sophomore Miranda Castiglione has put together a player-of-the-year type of season for the Penguins. Castiglione leads the Horizon League with 62 hits, 39 runs and 91 total bases, ranks third in batting average (.397), fourth in on-base percentage (.451) and ninth in slugging percentage (.583).

Castiglione, who is batting .415 against Horizon League foes, is also climbing a couple YSU single-season charts as well. Her 62 hits rank fourth on the single-season list while her 39 runs scored are tied for third. The single-season hits record is 72 set by Haley Thomas in 2012 and the runs record is 42, also set by Thomas in 2012.

Senior Courtney Ewing has been one of the most consistent hitters in the Penguins' lineup. Earlier this year, she owned the Penguins longest hitting streak this season at 18 games from March 11 through April 6. She has now hit safely in 32 of her last 35 games and carries a batting average of .353 (42-for-119) during that span.

Senior Casey Crozier has put her stamp on the Youngstown State pitching record book. Crozier, who leads the Horizon League with 16 wins, 175 strikeouts, 61 strikeouts looking and 162 innings pitched, is YSU all-time wins leader (57), strikeouts (544) and innings pitched (645).

Crozier is also four strikeouts shy of tying the Youngstown State single-season strikeout record of 179 set by Kelly Murphy in 2003. Her 16 wins is also tied for second on the single-season list.
