Softball Adds Single Game Against Pittsburgh Thursday

The Youngstown State softball team has added a single game against Atlantic Coast Conference-member Pittsburgh, Thursday, March 27, at the YSU Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.

The Penguins, who had a doubleheader against Akron postponed, enter the game with a 13-10 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Horizon League after a split with league foe Valparaiso on March 22. The Penguins own a home record of 2-2 in the inaugural season of their on-campus facility.

Pittsburgh enters the game with an 8-13 overall mark and an 0-5 record in the ACC. The Panthers were scheduled to play Ohio State on March 25, but that doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Leading the Panthers is Carly Thea with a .368 batting average, three home runs and 11 runs batted in. Savannah King leads the Pitt pitching staff with a 5-10 record and a 4.02 earned-run average.

For the Penguins, senior centerfield Courtney Ewing has been swinging a hot bat as of late. Ewing owns an 11-game hit streak and has raised her overall batting average 138 points during that span from .200 to .338. Over the last 11 games, Ewing is batting .457 (16-for-35) with three runs scored and four runs batted in.

Sophomore Miranda Castiglione leads the Penguins' offense with a .421 batting average and four home runs. Castiglione also has a team best 24 runs scored.

Senior Haley Knight leads the Penguins with seven doubles and ranks second on the squad with a .343 batting average. Senior Sarah Ingalls and freshman Sarah Dowd each have three home runs and are tied for the team lead with 17 RBIs.

Pitcher Casey Crozier leads the staff with a 7-3 record, a 2.46 earned-run average and 79 strikeoutes. Junior Kayla Haslett is 5-3 and freshman Caitlyn Minney picked up her first career win against Valparaiso on March 22. Minney pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief giving up two hits and striking out five for the victory.

Sophomore Katie Smallcomb is batting .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles and four runs batting during that span.

The Penguins are slated to face Cleveland State, March 29-30, for a three-game Horizon League series in Cleveland, Ohio.
