Penguins Host Valparaiso Today at YSU Softball Complex

The Youngstown State softball team opens Horizon League play today against Valparaiso at the YSU Softball Complex. The Penguins and Crusaders are playing a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

The Penguins are coming off a doubleheader split against Eastern Michigan this past Wednesday. The Guins won the complex opener 7-0 behind a strong pitching performance by Casey Crozier. The Eagles came back to take the night cap 6-3.

YSU enters the weekend with a 12-9 record and has won four of its last six games since March 14.

The Crusaders enter the contest with a 5-18 overall record and are 0-7 in road games. Jessie Marinec leads the Crusaders with a .359 batting average while Tarah McShane is tied for the team lead with four home runs. Amanda Wisniewski also has four home runs. Taylor Weissenhofer leads the Crusaders pitching staff with three victories.

The Penguins and Crusaders have met 33 times previously and Valparaiso leads the all-time series, 26-7. Last season, the Penguins and Crusaders met a total of six times. Valpo won the final two meetings in the Horizon League Tournament Championship.

Weather permitting, the series finale is set for Sunday at Noon.
