Softball Heads South For Four Games at Winthrop Tournament

Following a week off, the Youngstown State softball team plays four games in two days when it travels to South Carolina for the Winthrop Tournament, March 7-8.

The Penguins take on Marist and Connecticut, Friday, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, YSU faces Winthrop at 3 p.m. and Norfolk State 5 p.m.

Up Next
The Penguins will remain on the road when it plays a three-game series against UNC-Wilmington, March 11-12, and then visits Coppin State for a four-game tournament in Baltimore, Md., March 14-15.

Last Time Out
The Penguins split four games at the Tiger Classic at Tennessee State, Feb. 21-23, in Nashville, Tenn. The Penguins defeated Tennessee State, 1-0, before dropping a pair of games to Indiana State, 5-4, and Dayton, 9-3. The Penguins closed out the tournament with a win over Western Michigan.

"New" Home Opener
The Penguins are slated to play their home at the new on-campus YSU Softball Complex, Tuesday, March 18, in a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m.

Campbell Approaching Milestones
Youngstown State Head Coach Brian Campbell is approaching two coaching milestones. Campbell has 381 career victories and needs 19 more to earn 400. He also has 96 victories at Youngstown State and needs four more post his 100th at the school.

Castiglione, Crozier Sweep Horizon League Awards
Sophomore Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, Ontario) was named the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while senior Casey Crozier (Valparaiso, Ind.) earned the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 17-23

Castiglione, an infielder, led the Penguins at the plate collecting hits in each of the four contests to earn Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team honors.

She posted a .667 batting average (10-for-15) with an  on-base percentage of .667, and a .933 slugging percentage. Of the ten hits, she tied a school record with four against Western Michigan, including a home run.

In addition, Castiglione recorded three runs, two RBIs, one double and one stolen base to cap off her weekend performance.

Crozier became Youngstown State's all-time strikeout leader at the Tiger Classic while leading the Penguins to two wins in the circle.

She recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts against Tennessee State and posted  her 11th-career shutout, which is tied for fourth all-time.

Against Western Michigan, she fanned 10 in the victory and picked up her 44th career victory, which is tied for second all-time.

Ingalls Clutch
Senior Sarah Ingalls enters the weekend with a .308 batting average, going 8-for-23 in eight games. Ingalls, though, has driven in four runs with those eight hits. More impressively, three of her four RBIs have come with two outs.

Day and Knight
Senior Haley Knight has been a bright spot for the Penguins' offense early on. Knight is batting .316 and is tied for the team lead with five runs batted in.

Crozier Gets K's Mark, Nears Win Record
With 30 strikeouts this season, senior Casey Crozier became Youngstown State's all-time strikeout leader with 399 career strikeouts. Crozier also has 44 career victories and ranks tied for second on the all-time wins list. He needs two wins more to tie the record and three more to break the record of 46 set by Kim Givens frm 1993-96.

Castiglione Rollin'
Sophomore Miranda Castiglione has been a tough out this season. Castiglione leads the team with a .556 batting average, nine runs scored, two home runs and tied for the team lead with five runs batted in. She is slugging at a .815 clip and owns an on-base percentage of .571.
