Youngstown, Ohio -- Sophomore Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in and sophomore Caitlyn Minney struck out five in 2.2 innings of relief to lift the Youngstown State softball team to a 6-3 win over Akron on Tuesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field. The Penguins dropped the first game, 3-1.
The Penguins improve to 13-21 while the Zips move to 17-19.
Moffatt's two-out, bases loaded infield single scored Lacatena from third to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead after two innings.
In the bottom of the third, junior Katie Smallcomb's two-out double to left field plated Cali Mikovich and Lacatena's single up the middle scored Smallcomb to extend the Penguins' advantage to 3-0.
After the Zips scored in the top of the fifth, the Penguins added three more in the bottom half of the frame to take a 6-1 lead. Mikovich led off the inning with a double to left-center field and scored from third on an error. Following walks to Lacatena, Macey and Dowd loaded the bases, Moffatt looped a two-run double down the left-field line.
The Zips added two runs in the top of the seventh.
In the opener, Akron's Erin Seiler struck out 13 and limited the Penguins to just four hits.
YSU senior Kayla Haslett threw a complete game and struck out three in the hard-luck loss.
Mikovich went 1-for-3 and drove in the Penguins lone run in the bottom of the first inning.
Youngstown State visits Robert Morris, Wednesday, at 3 p.m.
