Softball Visits Eastern Michigan, Hosts Green Bay on Senior Day

The Youngstown State softball team visits Mid-American Conference member for a non-league midweek doubleheader, April 22, and hosts Green Bay in a three-game Horizon League series at the YSU Softball Field, April 24-25.

First pitch at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday is set for 2 p.m. On Friday, the Penguins and Phoenix play a single game at 3 p.m., and will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

The Penguins will also honor their lone senior Kayla Haslett on Senior Day on Saturday morning.

About Eastern Michigan
Eastern Michigan enters the game withe an overall record of 13-25 and have a home mark of 3-6. Leading the Eagles is Michelle Kriegshauser with a .385 batting average and eight home runs. Abi Clark is second on the squad with a .374 batting averge. Lindsay Rich leads the pitching staff with nine wins and has 69 strikeouts.

About Green Bay
The Phoenix enter the week with a 14-21 overall record and a 6-8 Horizon League mark. The Penguins and Phoenix are tied for fourth place in the league standings. Hailey Mohrfeld leads the squad with a 374 batting average, while Abby Brinkmeier is second with a .351 clip and its tied for the team lead with four home runs.

Lacatena Named Horizon League Co-Player of the Week
Sophomore Maria Lacatena (Stanhope, N.J.) was named the Horizon League Softball Co-Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon. Lacatena batted .533 and led the Penguins to a 4-3 record last week. 

Lacatena went 8-for-15 with four runs batted in, a double, triple, home run and scored for times. She recorded a hit in each of the last six games and had three multi-hit contests. She had two hits against Akron on April 14, went 2-for-2 with a home run against Robert Morris on April 15, and went 2-for-3 against UIC on April 18.

On the year, Lacatena is batting .315 with five doubles, a triple, four home runs and 17 runs batted in. She is also slugging at a .522 clip and has scored 16 runs. Against Horizon League foes, Lacatena is batting .325 (13-for-40) with RBIs in 14 games. She also has a six-game hitting streak against Horizon League opponents.

Moffatt Makin' Strides
Sophomore Brittney Moffatt has been stepping up lately for the Penguins. Last week, Moffatt batted .412 and helped the Penguins to a 4-3 week last week. Overall, Moffatt is batting .312 with four doubles and 11 runs batted in. Against Horizon League foes, Moffatt is hitting at a .381 clip with two doubles.

Gibson A "Lethal Weapon"
Sophomore Alex Gibson has been coming on strong for the Penguins. Gibson is batting .381 with a .571 slugging percentage and 11 runs batted in. She also has two home runs and two doubles. Gibson drove in a career-high five runs in a 17-4 win over UIC on April 18. 

Dowd On-Base Streak Reaches 10
As a leadoff batter, sophomore Sarah Dowd has been doing her job of getting on base by any means. Dowd, who is batting .284, has reached base in 10 straight games for the Penguins. Dowd has 31 hits, 26 walks and has been hit by seven pitches. She also ranks second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

Guins Need to Lead
When the Penguins lead after four innings, they have a high chance of hanging on for the win. The Penguins own a record of 14-2 when leading after four innings, 11-2 when leading after five and 12-1 when leading after six. 

Going Back to Cali
Freshman Cali Mikovich has been one of the Penguins hottest hitter over the last nine game. Mikovich is batting .379 (11-for-29) with four runs scored and five runs batted in during that time.
