Buies Creek, N.C. -- Senior Kayla Haslett pitched a complete game and scattered nine hits and freshman Cali Mikovich hit a home run and drove in two runs to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-1 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday morning.
The Penguins, now 2-2, also dropped a 9-2 decision to Towson later in the day.
Haslett struck out two to pick up her first win of the season.
Dowd led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and Mikovich clobbered her first career home run to center field to give the Penguins an early 2-0 lead.
Junior Miranda Castiglione reached on an error, stole second and eventually scored on Thompson-Cappadocio's single through the right side.
The Penguins took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Thompson-Cappodocio singled and pinch-runner Hannah Lucas scored on an error.
After a ETSU home run in the top of the fourth, Dowd doubled to lead off the bottom half of the frame and scored on another Bucs error to give the Penguins a 5-1 lead.
Against Towson, the Penguins recorded just four hits in the 9-2 loss.
The Tigers scored twice in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead, but Haslett's run-scoring single and Katie Smallcomb's RBI-fielder's choice knotted the game at 2-2.
Towson, however, answered with five more in the top of the second and one in the fourth and one in the sixth.
The Penguins are back in action, Feb. 20-21, when they play four games at the Elon Tournament in Elon, N.C.
