The Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games to Kent State, 3-1 and 5-1, on Wednesday evening at the YSU Softball Field.

The Penguins fall to 10-14 overall while the Golden Flashes improve to 19-6.

In the opener, juniors Miranda Castiglione and Jordan Macey each recorded two hits and sophomore Sarah Dowd had a run-scoring single.

Sophomore Caitlyn Minney allowed just five hits and struck out four, but took the hard-luck loss.

The Golden Flashes scored twice in the top of the first, but the Penguins cut the deficit in half when Dowd drove in Katie Smallcomb with a single to left in the bottom of the second.

The Golden Flashes added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

In the nightcap, Smallcomb went 3-for-3 and scored the Penguins only run, and sophomore Maria Lacatena went 2-for-2 and drove in a run.

The Penguins took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second on Lacatena's run-scoring single that plated Smallcomb.

The Golden Flashes used a five-run third inning to seal the victory.

The Penguins host Oakland in a doubleheader, Tuesday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
