The Youngstown State softball team plays its final home games of the 2015 season today when it hosts St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins enter today with an overall record of 17-27 and own a 7-8 mark at home this season. The Penguins are coming off a three-game series against Horizon League foe Green Bay and dropped two of three contests.
St. Bonaventure enters today with a 14-21 overall record and is 6-12 on the road. Leading the Bonnies is Emily McDonough with a .397 batting average. Josie Borysevicz leads the pitching staff with an 11-9 record and 12 complete games.
Leading the Penguins is junior Miranda Castiglione with a .346 batting average, 28 RBIs and a school-record 24 stolen bases. Castiglione also has seven doubles, three triples and four home runs. With 17 career home runs, Castiglione ranks tied for seventh on the career home run list, and she ranks sixth on the career runs scored chart with 91.
Over the last 16 games, Castiglione is batting .351 (20-for-57) with 11 runs scored, 10 RBIs, two doubles, a triple and a home run.
Sophomore Sarah Dowd, who is batting .326 overall is on quite a streak herself reaching base in the last 15 games. Over that span, Dowd is batting .388 (19-for-47) with 17 runs scored, three doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs. She is slugging .633 with an on-base percentage of .500 for an OPS of 1.133. She has walked seven times and has been hit by four pitches.
Cali Mikovich has been putting up some Freshman-of-the-Year-caliber numbers for the Penguins. Mikovich leads the Penguins with 16 extra-base hits, 10 multi-RBI games and is second on the team with 12 multi-hit games.
The Penguins have hit 35 home runs this season and that total ranks tied for fourth on the single-season list. The Penguins 70 stolen bases is a school record, surpassing the old mark of 65 set in 1992.
The Penguins close out the regular season with a three-game series at Horizon League opponent Valparaiso, May 1-2. First pitch on Friday is slated for 4 p.m. EDT, while Saturday's doubleheader is set for a Noon start.
