Softball Hosts Kent State, Oakland This Week

The Youngstown State softball team continues its 10-game homestand when it hosts Kent State in a doubleheader, Wednesday, and Oakland in a three-game Horizon League series, Friday and Saturday.

The Penguins' twinbill against the Golden Flashes is slated for a first pitch at 3 p.m. while Friday's single game against Oakland is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Saturday's doubleheader is set for Noon.

Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off a three-game sweep of Horizon League foe Detroit last weekend. The Penguins defeated the Titans, 8-5, 10-7, and 5-1. 

About Kent State
Kent State enters the week with a 17-6 overall record. Leading the Golden Flashes offensively is Michele Duffy with a .387 batting average. Maddy Grimm boasts a batting average of .370 with six home runs. Emma Johnson leads the pitching staff with an 8-3 record and a 0.87 earned-run average.

Castiglione Climbing
With 13 stolen bases this season, junior Miranda Castiglione needs three more to break the YSU single-season stolen base record. She currently ranks tied for second on that list and is third on the career chart with 28 swipes. 

Haslett Fires Gem
Senior pitcher Kayla Haslett turned in one of her best outings of the season against Detroit on March 21. Haslett fired a complete-game six-hitter with five strikeouts in the win. She also fielded her position well with two putouts and three assists. 

Going Back to Cali
Freshman Cali Mikovich leads the Penguins with 12 extra-base hits. Mikovich is tied for the team lead with five home runs and leads the team with three triples. The last YSU players with at least three triples in season were Haley Thomas with six and Kristina Rendle with three in 2010. She also have four doubles and leads the team with 18 RBIs.

Taylor Gang
Freshman Stevie Taylor has been providing some offensive punch for the Penguins. Taylor is batting .322 and have belted four home runs, including a three-run homer in YSU's 5-1 win over Detroit on March 21.

Castiglione, Dowd Movin Up Home Run List
Junior Miranda Castiglione and sophomore Sarah Dowd are quickly moving up the Youngstown State career home runs chart. Castiglione, who has three homers this year, is tied for eighth all-time with 16 career bombs. Dowd, who is tied for the team lead with five, has 12 career round-trippers and ranks 13th all-time.
