Wilmington, N.C. -- Sophomore Sarah Dowd went 2-for-4 and hit her second career grand slam as the Youngstown State softball team (4-6) defeated Norfolk State, 7-2, on Sunday morning. The Penguins also lost to UNC-Wilmington, 6-1, in the afternoon.
Dowd's grand slam was just the 12th in school history and she became the first player in school history to record more than one grand slam.
Trailing 2-1 after one, Dowd's slam came at the right moment and gave the Penguins a 5-2 lead. Jordan Macey reached on an error to lead off the inning. After singles by Katie Smallcomb and Maria Lacatena loaded the bases, Dowd clobbered her second home run of the season over the center-field fence.
Freshman Ashley Kozialk struck out seven in 4.2 innings pitched to pick up her second win of the seasoon.
Against UNC-Wilmington, Moffatt went 2-for-2 and scored the Penguins' lone run in the 6-1 loss.
The Penguins are back in action, Tuesday, March 10, when they visit Charleston Southernn in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. in Charleston, S.C.
