Busy Week on Tap for Penguins Softball

There is a short turnaround and a busy week in store for the Youngstown State softball team with seven games in three different states this week. The Penguins host Akron, Tuesday, April 14, before visiting Robert Morris, Wednesday, April 15, and UIC for a three-game series, April 17-18. 

First pitch in the doubleheaders against the Zips and Colonials is slated for 3 p.m, while Friday's start is slated for 4 p.m. and Saturday's twinbill has a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Last Time Out
The Penguins dropped the season series to Cleveland State after a 2-1 loss on April 12. The Penguins defeated the Vikings, 8-5, and lost, 10-7, on April 11.  The Penguins batted .341 against the Vikings, scored 16 runs and had 29 hits. Sophomore Sarah Dowd batted .417 with two home runs, four runs scored and four RBIs. Maria Lacatena batted .400 and drove in a team-best five runs.

About Akron
The Zips enter the week with a 16-18 overall record and have won four of their last five, including a 2-1 over Kent State. Leading the Zips is Chelsea Wildey with a .317 batting average. Alyssa Nicholas boasts a .310 average and is tied for the team lead with five home runs. Erin Seiler leads the pitching staff with a 16-12 record and a 2.89 earned-run average.

About Robert Morris
The Colonials enter the week with an 18-15 overall mark and a 6-0 record in the Northeast Conference. Jordan Gurganus lead the Colonials with a .404 batting average and Kristen Gabelt is batting .379 with a team-high six home runs. Nicole Sleith leads the Colonials' pitching staff with a 15-8 record and a 1.41 earned-run average. She has 208 strikeouts in 149 innings pitched. 

About UIC
The Flames enter the week with an overall mark of 17-15 and a league record of 8-3, which is tied for second place in the Horizon League standings. Eleni Polites leads the Flames with a .388 batting average while Tiana Mack-Miller is batting .364 with a team-high 26 RBIs. Karissa Frazier has a team-low 1.41 earned-run average while Elaine Heflin and Bridget Boyle each have six wins.

Dowd Reaches Top 10
With her two home runs last weekend, sophomore Sarah Dowd has moved into a tie for 10th place on the Youngstown State career home runs list with 15.  Dowd leads the team with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Against Horizon League opponents, Dowd is batting .324 with four home runs and 10 runs scored in 11 games. 

Castilgione Top Thief
Junior Miranda Castiglione leads the Horizon League in stolen bases with 19. Her total is also the Youngstown State single-season record. With her next stolen base, she will become the first player in school history to record 20 steals in a season. 

Haslett Now 10th in Ks
Senior Kayla Haslett has moved into 10th place on the YSU career strikeout list with 156. Haslett needs 11 more to move into a tie for eighth and 12 more for sole possession of eighth place.
