The Youngstown State softball team visits Kent State for a non-league, midweek doubleheader, Wednesday, April 27. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the Diamond at Dix.

The Penguins (23-17 overall, 10-6 Horizon League) are coming off a series win over Horizon League foe Green Bay last weekend. YSU picked up victories of 10-4 and 17-8 and dropped a one-run game, 10-9.

About Kent State
The Golden Flashes enter the game with an overall mark of 28-17. Holly Spears leads the Kent State offense with a .340 batting average and has 11 home runs while Maddie Grimm owns a .328 average with a team-high 15 home runs and 31 RBIs. Ronnie Ladines leads the pitching staff with a record of 16-6 and a 2.77 earned-run average.

Moffatt Named Player of the Week
Junior Brittney Moffatt was named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for April 25, the league announced on Monday. This is the first weekly award of Moffatt's career.

This also marks the third time a Youngstown State softball player has garnered the league's player-of-the-week award. Sophomore Cali Mikovich collected the award on March 28 and junior Sarah Dowd won the award on Feb. 15.

Last week, Moffatt led the Penguins to a Horizon League series win over Green Bay, defeating the Phoenix, 10-4, and 17-8, and falling 10-9.

For the week, Moffatt batted .727 (8-for-11) with a double, home run, four runs scored and eight runs batted in. She also finished with a 1.091 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .769.

She went 3-for-3 with a home run and a career-high six RBIs in the 10-4 win on Friday. She went 1-for-3 win the 10-9 loss, and finished the series with a 4-for-5 performance with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Castiglione, Dowd Tied For Second
After each hit a home run on Saturday against Green Bay, senior Miranda Castiglione and junior Sarah Dowd are tied for second on the YSU all-time home run list with 25. They tied Haley Thomas (2009-12) on the list. Castiglione and Dowd also joined Thomas as the only players in school history with at least 25 career home runs and at least 100 runs scored. Thomas is YSU's all-time runs leader with 146 while Castiglione is second at 134.  Dowd ranks fourth on the all-time list with 104.

Campbell Nearing Coaching Milestones
Youngstown State Head Coach Brian Campbell has 448 career victories and 163 at Youngstown State. He needs two more to move into second place on the YSU coaching wins list and two more to reach 450 for his career. Campbell currently ranks third at YSU in victories.

Taylor Made
Over the last 12 games, sophomore Stevie Taylor has increased her batting average 74 points from .250 to .324. During that span, Taylor batted .433 (13-for-30) with two home runs, a double, and 10 RBIs.

Penguins Set Single-Game Hits Mark
In their 17-8 win over Green Bay on April 23, the Penguins set a school single-game record with 20 hits. They broke the old mark of 19 set in 2008 and tied earlier this season against Cleveland State on April 13.

Other Approachable Records
With at least 10 games remaining, the Penguins are on pace to breaking or tying several offensive records. Their 243 runs and 218 RBIs rank second on the single-season charts while their 63 doubles rank fourth and 36 home runs rank tied for fourth.

Up Next
The Penguins visit Detroit for a three-game series, May 3-4. First pitch for next Tuesday's doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
