Mikovich Named Horizon League Player of the Week
Sophomore outfield Cali Mikovich has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is the first weekly award of Mikovich's career. This also marks the second time a Youngstown State softball player has garnered the league's player-of-the-week award. Junior Sarah Dowd won the award on Feb. 15. Junior Sarah Dowd is tied for the team lead with five home runs this season and now ranks third on the Youngstown State career home run list with 23. She needs two more to move into a tie for second with 25 and become just the third player in school history to hit at least 25 home runs.
Through their first 18 games of the year the Penguins had just won seven. The last time was in 2003.
Geanangel Zoned In
A main reason for the Penguins' eight-game winning streak has been the pitching of freshman Paige Geanangel. She has gone 6-0 with a 1.65 earned-run average in her last six outings. She has three complete games and a pair of shutouts during that span. Geanangel has also tossed 23 consecutive scoreless innings.
