Softball Hosts Robert Morris in Midweek Doubleheader Tuesday

The Youngstown State softball team hosts Robert Morris in a midweek, non-league doubleheader Tuesday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Field.

Last Time Out
The winners of six straight, the Penguins are coming off their first three-game sweep of Horizon League foe Valparaiso last weekend. The Penguins defeated the Crusaders, 4-1 and 3-0, on March 26 and 3-0 on March 27. Youngstown State also swept St. Bonaventure, 12-4, 9-5, on March 23, and split with Akron on March 22. The Zips won the opener, 8-0, but the Penguins rebounded with an 11-8 win in game two.

Robert Morris enters the doubleheader with an overall record of 7-22.  Jordan Gurganus leads the Colonials with a .424 batting average. Kaitlyn Ellzy has a pitching-staff best 7-9 record and an earned run average of 3.16.

Mikovich Named Player of the Week
Sophomore outfield Cali Mikovich has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is the first weekly award of Mikovich's career. This also marks the second time a Youngstown State softball player has garnered the league's player-of-the-week award. Junior Sarah Dowd won the award on Feb. 15.

Last week, Mikovich led the Penguins to a 6-1 week and batted. 400 with 10 runs, a triple, five home runs and 11 RBIs. She also finished with a 1.080 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage.

Mikovich became the first player in school history to hit two grand slams in a single season after blasting her second of the year against St. Bonaventure on March 23.

Mikovich had three multi-hit games and at least one hit in final six games of the week and had a home run in five straight games.

She also had a 3-for-5 performance against St. Bonaventure and went 4-for-9 with two home runs and three RBIs in the series against Valparaiso.

Penguins Are Offensive
This season, the Penguins have been putting up some impressive offensive numbers. Youngstown State leads the Horizon League in batting (.299), slugging (.464), on-base percentage (.384), runs scored (145), runs batted in (129), home runs (21), total bases (301) and sacrifice flys (9).
