The Youngstown State softball team hosts Horizon League foe UIC in a three-game series this weekend at the YSU Softball Field. Due to potential inclement weather, the series schedule has changed. The Penguins and Flames will play a doubleheader, Friday, at 2 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at Noon.
Last Time Out
The Penguins, who have won 10 of their last 11 games, are coming off a 3-1 win over Niagara on April 6. Freshman Paige Geanangel picked up her eighth win of the year and the seventh in the last eight decisions with a complete-game effort. She struck out three and scattered eight hits. Junior Maria Lacatena and senior Katie Smallcomb each had two hits while Lacatena hit a solo home run and freshman Stevie Taylor had a run-scoring single.
UIC enters the weekend with an overall record of 19-11 and 5-1 Horizon League mark. LaRi Mitchell leads the Flames with a 443 batting average. Laura Swan leads the Flames with 30 RBIs while Skylee James has a team-high five home runs. Elaine Heflin leads the pitching staff with an 11-5 record and owns a 1.87 earned-run average.
Castiglione in Rare Company
Senior Miranda Castiglione is the only player in school history with at least 20 home runs, 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. She has 22 home runs, 102 runs batted in and 117 runs scored during her career. She is just the third player in school history with at least 20 home runs and 100 RBIs. She ranks third in runs, tied for fourth in home runs and sixth in runs batted in. Castiglione also needs just 11 more hits to become the fifth player in school history with 200 hits in a career.
Minney Nearing 200 Ks
Junior Caitlyn Minney ranks seventh on the Youngstown State career strikeout list with 198. She also needs two more to become just the seventh pitcher in school history to record at least 200 career whiffs.
Lacatena, Mikoich Nearing Home Run Top 10
Junior Maria Lacatena and sophomore Cali Mikovich are nearing the Youngstown State career home run top 10 list. Lacatena, who has 15 career homers, needs one more to move into a tie for 10th place. Mikovich has 14 and needs two more to tie for 10th. If both hit their 16th career home run this season, the 2016 roster would place four players iin the career top 10. Junior Sarah Dowd currently ranks third with 23 and senior Miranda Castiglione is tied for fourth with 22.
The Penguins visit Cleveland State in a three-game series, April 12-13, in Cleveland, Ohio.
