Greensboro, N.C. -- Sophomore Cali Mikovich and senior Katie Smallcomb each hit a grand slam and the Youngstown State softball team recorded 11 hits in a 15-6 win over UNC-Greensboro on Sunday afternoon. The Penguins also lost to Iona, 11-4, earlier in the day.
The Penguins trailed 3-0 and used a seven-run fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Smallcomb singled to center field to score Gibson for the Penguins first run. Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio had a bases-loaded walk to score Lacatena, who doubled. Jordan Macey also recorded a basesloaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.
Mikovich followed with her first career grand slam to put the Penguins up 7-3.
The Penguins also scored four runs in the top of the sixth and four more in the top of the seventh.
Brittney Moffatt led off the sixth with a walk and moved to third after singles by Gibson and Lacatena. Smallcomb blasted her first career grand slam to right field to push the Penguins' lead to 11-4.
In the seventh, Gibson and Lacatena each had run-scoring singles and Hannah Lucas drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk and Macey was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Against Iona, Mikovich went 3-for-3 while Gibson went 2-for-4 in the 11-4 loss.
The Penguins take on Indiana State and Troy, Friday, March 4, at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
