Changes Announced to Softball Series Against Cleveland State

Due to the threat of rain on Saturday, changes have been made to the Youngstown softball series against Cleveland State.

The Penguins and Vikings will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m. First pitch for Saturday's single game is still to be determined.

Last Time Out
The Penguins dropped a non-league doubleheader to Kent State, 7-1, and 5-4, on April 25. 

Senior Day
The Penguins will honor six senior on Senior Day prior to the start of the doubleheader. Youngstown State will recognize seniors Sarah Dowd, Alexandria Gibson, Maria Lacatena, Caitlyn Minney, Brittney Moffatt and Alexa Schmidt.

About Cleveland State
Cleveland State enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-41 and 2-16 in the Horizon League. Leading the Vikings is Melissa Jacobsen with an batting average of .303. Mackenzie Joeken leads the team with five home runs. 

Hot Penguins
The Penguins (23-26 overall) have won their last six Horizon League games and seven of the last eight and sit in a tie for third with Valparaiso with 11-7 league records. During the last six Horizon League games, the Penguins batted .379 and scored 44 runs. Juniors Hannah Lucas and Stevie Taylor each batted .471 during the last six league contests.

Moffatt Earns POW
Senior Brittney Moffatt was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on April 24, after leading the Penguins to a 6-0 record last week.

This is the third time this season a YSU player has won a weekly award. Freshman Maddi Lusk was named pitcher of the week on March 27 and freshman Tatum Christy earned the player-of-the-week award on April 3.

Moffatt, who won her first award on April 25, 2016, led the Penguins to a 6-0 week and batted .429 (9-for-21) with three runs scored and nine RBIs. She had four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests during the week.

Moffatt, who reached base in every game and did not strikeout, went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in a 7-4 win over Wright State and had a hit in five of the six games last week.

Minney Reaches 300 Ks
With four strikeouts against Kent State, senior Caitlyn Minney became the fifth pitcher in school history to record at least 300 career strikeouts. Minney now has 301 and needs three more to move into fourth place.
