Due to rain in the forecast, the Youngstown State softball Horizon League series at Detroit Mercy has been changed. The Penguins and Titans will play a single game, Saturday, May 6, at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
The Titans enter the series with a 15-27 overall record, a 12-7 mark in the Horizon League and a fourth-place ranking in the league standings. Courtney Gilbert leads the Titans with a .385 batting average and Savvy Ferstle leads the team with six home runs. Liz Murphy leads the staff with 12 wins and a 3.56 earned-run average.
The Penguins will participate in the 2017 Horizon League Championship, May 10-13. Location, times and seeds are still to be determined.
Youngstown State (26-26, 14-7) are tied for second place in the league standings and have won nine straight Horizon League games. Over that span, the Penguins batted .377 and averaged 10.6 hits and 7.4 runs per game. The pitching staff also limited opponents to a .255 batting average and just 23 runs scored for an average a 2.6 runs per game.
Campbell Approaching Milestones
Youngstown State Head Coach Brian Campbell is approaching a pair of coaching milestones. Campbell, who is in his ninth season at YSU, has 196 wins with the Penguins and needs just four more to become the second coach in school history to post 200 wins. He also needs 12 more to break the all-time coaching wins record at the school, which is 207 set by the late Ed Strauss from 1985-95. Campbell also has 481 career victories and needs just 19 more to reach 500.
Lucas Among Leaders
Junior Hannah Lucas is having the best season of her career and ranks among the Horizon League leaders in many categories. In league play, Lucas leads the league in hits and runs scored, ranks third with a .506 on-base percentage and fourth with a .418 batting average. Overall she is tied for second with 19 stolen bases and second with 34 runs scored.
During the course of the Penguins' nine-game winning streak in league play, senior Brittney Moffatt has been a tough out. Moffatt is batting .500 (16-for-32) with a double and four runs scored. She has also driven in 13 runs and has an OPS of 1.074.
Youngstown State has really turned around its season. After starting the year 5-17 after 22 games, the Penguins are 21-9 in their last 30. During that time, junior Hannah Lucas batted a team-high .366 and went 18-for-18 in stolen base attempts. Freshman Tatum Christy batted .355 with 17 RBIs. The pitching staff combined for a 2.59 earned-run average and limited opponents to a .247 batting average.
Minney Climbing Charts
Last week, senior Caitlyn Minney became the fifth pitcher in school history to record at least 300 career strikeouts. She now ranks fourth all-time with 312. Minney also moved up to seventh on the career wins list with 29.
