Coming off its second straight Horizon League series sweep, the Youngstown State softball team (23-24) hosts Kent State in a non-league doubleheader, Tuesday, April 25, at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Field.
Last Time Out
The Penguins, the winners of seven of their last eight games, posted their second straight Horizon League series sweep with three straight wins over Green Bay (4/22-23), 7-0, 10-2, and 5-1. Youngstown State swept Wright State (4/18-19).
About Kent State
Kent State enters the doubleheader with an overall record of 19-24. Ashley Grimm leads the Golden Flashes with a .343 batting average, 15 home runs and 46 RBIs. Holly Speers is batting .313 and has nine homers. Ronnie Ladines leads the staff with 11 victories, 139 strikeouts and an earned-run average of 2.29.
Penguins' Bats Heating Up
Over the last five games, the Penguins have recorded at least 10 hits in each game and have totaled 58 during that span. Youngstown State averaged 11.6 hits per game and batted .400 (58-for-145) in the last five contests. The Penguins also scored 40 runs in the last five games.
Minney Needs Three For 300
Senior Caitlyn Minney has 297 career strikeouts to become just the fifth player in school history to record 300 strikeouts in a career. She ranks fifth all-time in strikeouts. Her 28 career victories rank eighth on the all-time list. In her last two starts, Minney is 2-0 with an earned-run average of 1.08 and has 11 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.
Lucas the Leadoff
Junior Hannah Lucas has been performer the role of leadoff hitter to near perfection. Lucas, who leads the team with a .331 batting average, has reached base in 11 straight games, including a hit in the last five contests. Lucas also leads the team with 14 stolen bases, which are tied for fourth on the YSU single-season list.
Moffatt Named Horizon League Player of the Week
Youngstown State senior Brittney Moffatt has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week for April 24, the league announced on Monday. This is the second weekly award of Moffatt's career.
This is the third time this season a YSU player has won a weekly award. Freshman Maddi Lusk was named pitcher of the week on March 27 and freshman Tatum Christy earned the player-of-the-week award on April 3.
Moffatt, who won her first award on April 25, 2016, led the Penguins to a 6-0 week and batted .429 (9-for-21) with three runs scored and nine RBIs. She had four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests during the week.
Moffatt, who reached base in every game and did not strikeout, went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in a 7-4 win over Wright State and had a hit in five of the six games last week.
The Penguins close out the home portion of the 2017 schedule with a three-game series against Horizon League foe Cleveland State, April 28-29, at the YSU Softball Field. On Saturday, Youngstown State will celebrate Senior Day.
