The Youngstown State softball team (16-22, 4-5 Horizon League) looks to get back to its winning ways when it visits Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky for a three-game series, April 11-12, in Highland Heights, Ky.
Northern Kentucky enters the series with an overall record of 9-25 and 3-6 in the Horizon League. The Norse lost the season series to Detroit Mercy last weekend. The Norse defeated the Titans, 6-2, in game one, but lost the next two games, 6-5 and 10-5. Ava Lawson leads the Norse with a .333 batting average while Dani Devlin leads the team with eight home runs. Ashlynn Roberts leads the pitching staff with four victories.
The Penguins will be idle this weekend and return to action with a three-game Horizon League series against Wright State, April 18-19, at the YSU Softball Field.
Last Time Out
The Penguins were swept by Horizon League leader UIC last weekend at the YSU Softball Field. The Penguins fell 1-0 in nine innings, 4-0, and 2-1 in eight innings. Freshman Maddi Lusk allowed just three runs in 17 innings pitched and struck out 18 batters.
Lusk Among League Leaders
Freshman Maddi Lusk is proving she is one of the top pitchers in the Horizon League. Lusk, who has 10 victories, leads the Horizon League with 111 strikeouts 141.1 innings pitched and 22 games started. She also ranks second in wins (10) and third in earned-run average (2.08).
Dowd Ties Career Home Run Record
Senior Sarah Dowd tied the YSU career home run record last week when she hit the 34th home run of her career with a solo home run against Valparaiso. Dowd, who has five home runs in 2017, blasted 11 home runs in both 2016 and 2015 and had seven homers as a freshman in 2014.
Mikovich Moving Up Steals Mark
Junior Cali Mikovich, who is tied for sixth all-time with 22 career home runs, is moving her way up the YSU all-time steals chart. Mikovich ranks tied for fourth all-time with 27 career steals. Last season, Mikovich had 14 steals and had eight in 2017. Mikovich is one of three players in school history with at least 20 home runs and 25 stolen bases. The other two are Miranda Castiglione (29 HR, 69 SB) and Haley Thomas (25 HR, 26 SB).
Minney Needs 18 Ks For 300
Senior Caitlyn Minney, who ranks fifth all-time in career strikeouts, needs 18 more whiffs to become the fifth player in school history to reach 300 career strikeout mark. She has 282 career strikeouts.
Christy Making Moves
Freshman Tatum Christy has made a big impression during her first campaign, especially over the last 10 games. During that span, Christy is batting, .444 (11-for-25) with four runs scored, a double, triple, home run and seven RBIs.
Lusk In Single-Season Charts
Freshman Maddi Lusk leads the Horizon League with 111 strikeouts and has entered the YSU single-season strikeout list. Her 111 whiffs rank sixth on the YSU single-season list. She is also the first freshman pitcher since 2003 to strikeout at least 100 batters.
