Softball Extends Winning Streak to Eight After Sweep of Robert Morris

The Youngstown State softball team extending its winning streak to eight games after sweeping a doubleheader from Robert Morris, 8-0, and 12-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.

With the sweep, the Penguins improve to 13-17 overall, and the winning streak matches the third-longest stretch in school history. Rober Morris fell to 6-21 on the season.

In the opener, freshman Maddi Lusk struck out seven in a five-inning two-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate and had three RBIs. Junior Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-3 and drove in a run while senior Sarah Dowd had two RBIs.

The Penguins used a five-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

In game two, junior Cali Mikovich went 2-for-3 with a solo home run while classmate Stevie Taylor drove in five runs and became the 16th player in school history to hit a grand slam.

After jumping out to a 3-1 lead after two innings, the Penguins saw their lead cut to 3-2 in the top of the third. Sophomore Paige Geanangel entered the game with the tying run on second and quickly induced two ground outs and a strikeout to end the threat.

The Penguins tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third on senior Sarah Dowd's run-scoring triple and Taylor's sacrifice fly.

Taylor's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth capped a seven-run inning to put the game out of reach.

Youngstown State visits Valparaiso in a three-game series, April 1-2, in Valparaiso, Ind.
