The Youngstown State softball team is gearing up for a busy with with a pair of Horizon League series this week. The Penguins host Wright State, April 18-19, and visit Green Bay, April 21-22.
First pitch for Tueday's doubleheader is at 3 p.m. while Wednesday's single game is slated for 2 p.m. The Penguins and Phoenix will play a single game on Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Penguins dropped two out of three games to Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky last week. The Norse defeated the Penguins in game one, 9-0, and game three, 11-3. YSU won the second game, 6-4.
About Wright State
Wright State enters the series with a 14-21 overall record and a 9-3 mark in the Horizon League, which is second in the league standings. Honnah Susor leads the Raiders with a .370 average while Macy Cook is batting .364. Ashley Sharp leads the pitching staff with 11 victories, including and 8-0 mark in the league, and 39 strikeouts.
About Green Bay
The Phoenix enter the week with a 2-22 overall record and a 1-9 in the Horizon League. Chyanne Onstad leads the Phoenix with a .371 batting average while Allie Taylor has a team-best four home runs. Katie Rossman has both Green Bay victories.
Dowd Breaks Home Run Record
With a three-run home run against Northern Kentucky on April 13, senior Sarah Dowd broke the Youngstown State all-time home run record with the 35th home run of her career. She broke the record of 34 set by McKenzie Bedra from 2005-08.
Lusk Among League Leaders
Freshman Maddi Lusk is been one of the Horizon League's top pitchers all season. She leads the league with 149.1 innings pitched, ranks second with 114 strikeouts, third with 10 wins and fifth with a 2.53 earned-run average. Her 114 strikeouts rank sixth on the YSU single-season list, and are the most by a freshman since Kelly Murphy's 179 in 2003.
After the Green Bay series, the Penguins return home to host Kent State in a doubleheader, Tuesday, April 25, at 3 p.m.
