Softball Earns Split Against Dayton

Junior Paige Geanangel fired a six-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-0 win in game two of a doubleheader against Dayton on Wednesday at the Covelli Sports Complex. The Penguins dropped the first game, 5-3.

With the split, the Penguins impove to 10-15 overall while Dayton moves to 9-18 overall.

In the nightcap, senior Stevie Taylor went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while senior Hannah Lucas and sophomore Tatum Christy also had two hits.

The Penguins scored all five runs in the first three innings posting two in the first, one in the second and two more in the third. In the bottom of the first, sophomore Maddi Lusk doubled home Lexi Zappitelli and scored on Taylor's single and an error.

Christy doubled to left-center field and advanced to third on a a single through the right side by Lucas and scored on a double steal to put the Penguins up, 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, Lusk led off the frame with a walk and Taylor belted the first pitch she saw over the center-field fence for her fifth home run of the season.

In the opener, Lusk went 2-for-3 and drove in all three of the Penguins' runs.

The Penguins return to Horizon League action with a three-game series against Detroit Mercy, March 30-31, at the Covelli Sports Complex.
