Hampton, Va. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday to close out the Hampton Tournament. The Penguins lost to Buffalo, 9-6, and Hampton, 4-2.
The Penguins fall to 4-5 on the season and went 2-3 at the Hampton Tournament.
Against Buffalo, the Penguins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first after Nikki Saibene clobbered a three-run home run to right-center field. The Bulls plated two runs in the bottom of the second, but Maddi Lusk's two-run home run in the top of the third pushed the Penguins lead to 5-2.
The used a four-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead but Alexis Roach scored on a wild pitch in the top half of the sixth to knot the game at 6-6. Buffalo, however, added three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to come away with the 9-6 win.
Freshman Yazmine Romero went 3-for-3 and scored two runs while Saibene went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.
In the second game, senior Hannah Lucas had two hits while Saibene belted her third home run of the season, a solo shot, and Roach posted a run-scoring single in the 4-2 loss.
The Penguins return to action at the Winthrop tournament, March 3-4.
