The Youngstown State softball team split a doubleheader against Niagara dropping game one, 9-4, and winning the nightcap, 3-2, at the Covelli Sports Complex on Friday.
The Penguins improve to 16-20 overall while Niagara moves to 10-23 on the year.
Youngstown State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through two innings with run-scoring singles by Nikki Saibene and Hannah Lucas in the bottom of the first innning. In the bottom of the second, the Penguins added their third run of the game when senior Alexis Roach singled, stole second and third and scored on Romero's bunt single.
The Purple Eagles added a run in the third and an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but Buffenbarger shut the door.
In the opener, the Purple Eagles cranked out 13 hits and led 6-1 through five and a half innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Youngstown State mounted a rally scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. Senior Cali Mikovich scored on a throwing error and Liz Birkbeck drove in a pair with a two out single to center field.
The Purple Eagles added three more in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Youngstown State visits Akron in a doubleheader, Tuesday, April 17, at 3 p.m.
