Softball Falls Twice at UIC on Saturday

Chicago, Ill. -- The Youngstown State softball dropped a doubleheader to UIC, 3-2, and 2-0, to close out the 2018 regular season.

The Penguins fall to 24-24 overall and 14-10 in the Horizon League. UIC improves to 30-18 overall and 19-4 in the league.

In the opener, the Penguins led 2-0 through five-and-half innings after a Elizabeth Birkbeck hit a solo home run in the top of the second and Milena Lacatena's pinch-hit run-scoring single in the top of the third.

The Flames scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth and scored the game-winning in the bottom of the seventh.

In the nightcap, Yamine Romero went 3-for-3 and Stevie Taylor went 2-for-4 to record five of YSU's five hits.

Freshman Elle Buffenbarger scattered seven hits and struck out five in the hard-luck loss.

The Penguins will play in the 2018 Horizon League Championship, May 9-12, in Chicago, Ill.
