Chicago, Ill. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a tough 5-1 decision to UIC on Friday afternoon at Flames Field.

The Penguins fall to 24-22 overall and 14-8 in the Horizon League while UIC improves to 28-18 overall and 17-4 in the league and secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship.

Sophomore Tatum Christy went 3-for-3 to lead the Penguins offensively and freshman Milena Lacatena had a run-scoring, pinch-hit single to produce the Penguins' lone run.

After UIC plated a run in the bottom of the third, the Penguins knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. Freshman Nikki Saibene laced a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on Alexis Roach's sacrifice bunt. After a Christy infield single put runners on the corners, Lacatena singled to center field to plate Saibene with the game-tying run.

The Flames broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Youngstown State and UIC will conclude the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, starting at 2 p.m. ET.
