The Youngstown State earned its seventh and eighth straight win after a doubleheader sweep over St.Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at the Covelli Sports Complex. The Penguins won the opener, 1-0, and the nightcap, 5-1.
With the sweep, the Penguins improve to 12-17 overall while the Bonnies fall to 2-16. The eight-game winning streak is tied for the fifth longest in school history and marks the fourth straight year the program has won at least eight consecutive games.
In the opener, freshman Addy Jarvis tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts to pick up her seventh win of the season and the fourth shutout of the year.
In the night cap, the Bonnies scored an unearned run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Yazmine Romero and Grace Cea each singled to put runners on the corners with one out when Lusk crushed her fourth home run of the season over the left-center field fence to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Tatum Christy followed with a double and scored on a two-out double by Alex DeLeon.
The Penguins added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Sarah Bader scored on a fielding error.
Elle Buffenbarger struck out six in four-plus innings of work to register her fourth win of the year. After the Bonnies opened the top of the fifth with a pair of singles, Lusk came in relief and struck out the side and picked up her first save of the year with four strikeouts in three innings.
Youngstown State visits IUPUI in a three-game Horizon League series, March 29-30, in Indianapolis, Ind.
