Softball Falls Twice at Spartan Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team started the 2019 campaign with a pair of losses to at the USC-Upstate Spartan Classic on Friday afternoon. The Penguins lost to East Carolina, 11-4, and Towson, 8-0 in six innings.

In the opener against East Carolina, freeshman Grace Cea went 2-for-3 and scored a run while sophomore Nikki Saibene was 2-for-4 with a run scoring single. Junior Elizabeth Birkbeck drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the first inning.

Against Towson, the Penguins managed just three hits in the 8-0 shutout. Sophomore Yazmine Romero, senior Lexi Zappitelli and Cea collected the Penguins' hits.

Youngstown State faces Miami (Ohio) and USC-Upstate, Saturday, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
