Softball Begins Busy Week Hosting Akron in Mid-Week Doubleheader Tuesday
 
• First Pitch
Youngstown State continues its nine-game homestand with a pair of non-league, midweek doubleheaders against Akron, March 26, and St. Bonaventure, March 27, and continues Horizon League play this weekend, March 29-30, at IUPUI. Both home doubleheaders have start times at 3 p.m. at the Covelli Sports Complex. First pitch in Indianapolis on Friday is set for 3 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

After the series at IUPUI, the Penguins visit Niagara, Wednesday, April 3, at 3 p.m.
 
• Last Time Out
The Penguins swept the season series from Oakland, March 23-24. The Penguins won, 4-2, 8-4, andn 14-9. Freshman Grace Cea batted .556 (5-for-9) with five runs, a home run and six runs batted in. Nikki Saibene batted .375 with two home runs and eight runs batted in. Lexi Zappitelli and Yazmine Romero each batted .500 against the Golden Grizzlies while the Penguins batted .357 as a team with six home runs.
 
• About Akron
The Zips enter the week with a 6-14-2 record and are 0-6-1 on the road. Leading Akron is Sydney Jascoe and Kayla Wulf each with a .373 batting average. Jascoe also leads the Zips with five home runs and 16 RBIs. Adrian Smith leads the pitching staff with a 4-4 record, 48 strikeouts and a 4.99 earned-run average.
 
• About St. Bonaventure
The Bonnies enter the week with a 2-11 overall record and are 0-4 in away games. Olivia Golay leads the team with a .333 batting average while Ally Haskell and Rylee Hehir each have one win.
 
• About IUPUI
The Jaguars enter the week with an overall record of 9-21 and a 3-0 mark in the Horizon League. IUPUI swept the season series from Northern Kentucky, March 22-23. Leading the Jaguars is Delainey Turner wiht a .340 batting average. Lexi Lucas, the reining Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, leads IUPUI with six wins, 44 strikeouts and a 5.55 earned-run average.
 
• Saibene Ties RBI Mark
Sophomore Nikki Saibene became just the second player in school history to drive in seven runs in a game when she hit a three-run home run and a grand slam against Oakland on March 24. Saibene is also the 18th player in school history to hit a grand slam. The last player to hit two home runs in a game was Saibene in 2018 against Green Bay at the Covelli Sports Complex.
 
 Geanangel, Buffenbarger Moving Up Ks Chart
Senior Paige Geanangel and sophomore Elle Buffenbarger are both moving up the YSU career strikeout list. Geanangel now ranks eighth all-time with 193 strikeouts and Buffenbarger is ninth with 190. The last sophomore pitcher to accumulate 200 career strikeouts was Casey Crozier, who had 224 through two full seasons.
 
 Penguins Picked Second
The Youngstown State softball team has been predicted to finish second in the Horizon League after a vote of the league's head coaches, the league announced. UIC was picked to win the 2019 Horizon League regular-season championship with all nine first-place votes and 81 total points followed by the Penguins with 69 points.  Checking in at third place in the poll is last year's tournament runner-up Oakland (63 points). In fourth position in the poll is Wright State (44 points). Northern Kentucky (40 points) and IUPUI (39 points) were chosen fifth and sixth respectively in the poll. Rounding out the 2019 Preseason Poll are Detroit Mercy (36 points), Green Bay (22 points), and Cleveland State (11 points).
