Softball Drops Two at Charlotte First Pitch Classic

Charlotte, N.C. -- Sophomore Yazmine Romero collected four hits on the day, but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic on Sunday. The Penguins lost to Charlotte, 9-1, in five innings and Winthrop, 6-2.

Youngstown State falls to 0-7 on the season.

In the opener against Charlotte, junior Maddi Lusk hit a solo home run - her second homer of the season, in the top of the second inning to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Charlotte answered with a run in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth, seven in the bottom of the fifth inning to enforce the mercy rule.

Romero had YSU's two other hits.

Against Winthrop, senior Lexi Zappitelli and Romero each went 2-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Penguins offensively. Junior Elizabeth Birkbeck drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and sophomore Milena Lacatena posted a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Winthrop added two runs in the top of the second and one each in the top of the fifth and seventh innings.

The Penguins are idle until their spring break trip which begins with a game against Rhode Island in Charleston, S.C.
