Freshman Grace Cea hit a three-run home and freshman Addy Jarvis fired a complete game with seven strikeouts to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 4-3 win over Kent State in game two of a doubleheader at the Covelli Sports Complex. The Penguins lost the opener 10-0 in five innings.
With the win, Youngstown State improves to 5-17 while the Golden Flashes move to 7-15 on the year.
Youngstown State broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Dani Dadig led off the inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. After senior Lexi Zappittelli walked, Cea crushed the first pitch she saw over the left-center field fence to give YSU a 3-0 lead.
Kent State knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by Hailey Hopkins and two-out single by Kaitlyn Miller.
Elizabeth Birkbeck walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Sophia Patonis reached on a fielding error and advanced to second while pinch-runner Sarah Bader advance to third on a throwing error. Bader scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Jarvis retired the side in order in the top of the fifth en route to her fourth win of the season.
The Penguins open Horizon League play against Oakland with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
