Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from North Carolina Central

Durham, N.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over North Carolina Central on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Penguins, who improve to 3-10 overall, won game one 3-0 and held on for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, freshman Addy Jarvis tossed a three-hit shutout and struckout nine batters for the third straight game.

Junior Tatum Christy went 2-for-4 with a solo home run while senior Lexi Zappitelli also collected two hits.

In the nightcap, the Penguins jumped out to a 6-0 lead before allowing four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and hanging on for the victory.

Senior Lexi Zappitelli doubled home sophomore Yazmine Romero, who singled the lead off the game, and gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Grace Cea and sophomore Nikki Saibene followed with two-out run-scoring singles to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.

Junior Miyah Mitchum belted a solo home run in the top of the second and, in the top of the fifth, Christy and Saibene each drew run-scoring walks to extend the Penguins lead to 6-0.

Youngstown State faces Campbell, Wednesday, in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
