Softball Eliminated After Losses to Oakland, Northern Kentucky

Chicago, Ill. -- The Youngstown State softball team was eliminated from the 2019 Horizon League Championship after dropping a pair of games to Oakland, 6-4, in 15 innings and Northern Kentucky, 6-0.

The Penguins finish the season with an overall record of 25-29. 

Elizabeth Birkbeck went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three runs batted in while Yazmine Romero went 4-for-8 and Grace Cea went 3-for-8. 

Freshman Addy Jarvis struck out 12 in 13 inning pitched.

Birkbeck got the Penguins on the board in with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

Oakland cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth and tied the game with a two-out double by Kelsie Swanson.

The Golden Grizzlies took their first lead of the game in the top of the 12th when Swanson triple and scored on an infield single.

In the bottom half of the frame, Romero led off with a single and advance to third on an error on Lexi Zappitelli's sacrfice bunt. Zappitelli advanced to second on the play.

Romero scored to tie the on Cea's single up the middle but Zappitelli was called out on a close play at the plate trying to score the game-winning run.

After the Golden Grizzlies regained the lead on a sacrifice fly by Swanson in the top of the 13th, Birkbeck led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left field.

Oakland scored twice in the top of the 15th to escape with the victory.

Against Northern Kentucky, the Norse scored three times in the first and once in the second to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Northern Kentucky added two more to seal the win.

Zappitelli went 2-for-3 with a double.
