Softball Visits Robert Morris, Hosts Cleveland State in Horizon League Series

First Pitch
The Youngstown State softball team (16-19, 5-2 Horizon League) returns to action with a non-league doubleheader against Robert Morris, Wednesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. The Penguins also return home to host Horizon League foe Cleveland State in a three-game, April 12-13, at the Covelli Sports Complex. Friday's single game starts at 3 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. 

Gameday Promotions
On April 12, the YSU Athletic Department will have a Pete the Penguin Photo Day and will be giving away YSU Playing Cards. Youngstown State will celebrate Senior Day on April 13 and will giveaway a YSU Ruler.

Up Next
The Penguins host Wright State, April 16, in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and April 17 in a single game at 3 p.m. at the Covelli Sports Complex. 

About Robert Morris
The Colonials enter the doubleheader with an overall record of 10-25 and a 1-1 record at home. Leading Robert Morris is Natalie Higgins with a .302 batting average, six home runs and 19 RBIs. Dana Vatakis leads the staff with a 6-11 record and 42 strikeouts.

About Cleveland State
The Vikings enter the week with a 10-20 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Horizon League play. Riley Ries leads the Vikings with a .349 batting average and 21 runs batted in. Kelly Hysong is batting .327 and has a team-best seven home runs. Hanna Griffin leads the staff with six wins while Hysong has four victories and 47 strikeouts. 

Penguins Set Consecutive Win Record
Youngstown State broke a 15-year-old record by winning 11 consecutive games from March 20 through April 3. The old record of 10 was set in 2004.

Jarvis Set Single-Game Ks Record, Among Tops in HL
Freshman Addy Jarvis set the Youngstown State single-game strikeout record with a career-high 15 Ks against Niagara on April 3. She is also making her mark as one of the top pitchers in the Horizon League. She is tied for the league lead with nine wins, 12 complete games and four shutouts . She ranks second with 136 strikeouts and fourth with a 2.85 earned-run average. Her 136 strikeouts also rank fifth on the YSU single-season list.

Saibene Ties RBI Mark
Sophomore Nikki Saibene became just the second player in school history to drive in seven runs in a game when she hit a three-run home run and a grand slam against Oakland on March 24. Saibene is also the 18th player in school history to hit a grand slam. The last player to hit two home runs in a game was Saibene in 2018 against Green Bay at the Covelli Sports Complex.
Geanangel, Buffenbarger Moving Up Ks Chart
Senior Paige Geanangel and sophomore Elle Buffenbarger are both moving up the YSU career strikeout list. Buffenbarger now ranks eighth all-time with 209 strikeouts and Geanangel is ninth with 206. That duo also became the eighth (Buffenbarger) and ninth (Geanangel) players in school history to record at least 200 career strikeouts. The last sophomore pitcher to accumulate 200 career strikeouts was Casey Crozier, who had 224 through two full seasons.
Penguins Picked Second
The Youngstown State softball team has been predicted to finish second in the Horizon League after a vote of the league's head coaches, the league announced. UIC was picked to win the 2019 Horizon League regular-season championship with all nine first-place votes and 81 total points followed by the Penguins with 69 points.  Checking in at third place in the poll is last year's tournament runner-up Oakland (63 points). In fourth position in the poll is Wright State (44 points). Northern Kentucky (40 points) and IUPUI (39 points) were chosen fifth and sixth respectively in the poll. Rounding out the 2019 Preseason Poll are Detroit Mercy (36 points), Green Bay (22 points), and Cleveland State (11 points).
