Lacatena's Grand Slam Salvages Split at Detroit Mercy

Detroit, Mich. -- Sophomore Milena Lacatena hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lifted the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-2 win over Detroit Mercy in game one of a doubleheader. The Penguins lost game two, 2-0.

With the split, the Penguins improve to 16-19 overall and 5-2 in the Horizon League while the Titans move to 15-21 and 7-5 in the league.

In the opener, junior Tatum Christy went 3-for-4 while Lexi Zappitelli went 2-for-4. 

Senior Paige Geanangel tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts while allowing just four hits.

Nikki Saibene's sacrifice fly in the top of the of the fourth put the Penguins up 1-0 before the Titans knotted the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the nightcap, the Penguins mustered just two hits.

Youngstown State returns to action against Robert Morris, Wednesday, April 10, at 3 p.m.
