Akron, Ohio - The Youngstown State track and field teams competed at the Northeast Ohio Quad today at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex. The meet was meant to be split up on Friday and Saturday but due to the possibility of some nasty weather this weekend all of the events took place on Friday besides the men's and women's shot put and discus which will continue on Saturday at 1 p.m.
On day one of the meet the Youngstown State track team was able to pull off eight top-three finishes.
Competing in the women's high jump was freshman jumpers Chenera Lacey and Mackenzie Sturtz. Lacey finished in second jumping 1.63 meters as Sturtz jumped 1.58 meters to finish in third place. Lacey had her best jump of the outdoor season against junior Jennifer Foster from Ashland who finished in first with a jump of 1.78 meters.
Sophomore Nina Grambling tied her second-best time of the outdoor season in the 100-meter dash running 11.94 seconds to finish inside the top three at second place. Senior Alteeka Vanwright took a fifth place finish in the 400 meter dash and ran a time of 58.87 seconds.
Running in the 800 meter run was senior Alexis Cooper who finished the race in seventh at a time of 2:23 seconds.
For the second time of the season sophomore Jen Shiley and freshman runners Tori Thompson and Megan Gunther ran in the 400 meter hurdles. They all finished in the top eight with Shiley finishing in second place with a time of 1:05 seconds and Thompson finishing in sixth place (1:09) and behind her was Gunther who finished in seventh place (1:09).
Junior Jessica Parham was the one of two Penguins who competed in the javelin who finished in the top five. Parham threw the javelin 35.66 meters to earn herself a fourth place finish. Junior Ashley Smith was the other Penguin who competed and was able to finish in eighth place with a toss of 25.42 meters.
The Penguins had two top 10 finishers out of 18 girls in the long jump. Freshman Ellie Pollock finished in fifth place with a leap of 5.48 meters and senior Kendall Homan slipped into tenth place with a jump of 5.17 meters. Pollock's jump of 5.48 meters would make it her best jump of the season as well.
Ashley Smith and Brittany Stockmaster competed in the women's 1500 meter run and ended up finishing right behind each other. Smith finished the race in seventh place clocking in at 5:02.57 as Stockmaster followed in eighth place with a time of 5:02.89.
Sophomore Jay Jakovina was able to pull off his second victory in the high jump for the second week in a row. He was able to jump 2.05 meters to beat junior John Dahlstand of Akron who jumped 2.00 meters. Penguin Arnaldo Morales was right behind Dahlstand as he also jumped 2.00 meters to finish in his first third place finish of the 2014 outdoor season.
In the men's javelin Youngstown State had two Penguins who finished among the top five them being sophomore Robert Dixon and junior Kevin McCulloh. Dixon was able to squeeze in third place having a throw of 53.53 meters and McCulloh finished in right behind him at the fourth place spot with a throw of 52.96 meters.
Junior Clay Febus was the only Penguin competing in the men's 110 meter hurdles and managed to finish in fourth place with a time of 15.12 seconds. Sophomore Dalyn Gattison competed in the 100 meter dash and also was able to finish in fourth place running a time of 10.78 seconds which would be his best time of the season.
Gattison also had his best time of the season in the 200 meter dash as he ran a time of 22.28 seconds to finish in fifth place beating his old best by .28 seconds. Robin Hall also competed in the 200 meter dash and finished behind Gattison in sixth with a time of 22.38 seconds.
YSU will continue in tomorrow's meet with the shot put, discus and hammer throw beginning at 1 p.m.
