University Park, Pa. — Youngstown State's Eric Rupe, Austin McLean, and Nick Gliha along with Samantha Hamilton, McKinsie Klim and Michelle Klim all competed in the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Rupe continued his breakout year that began in the cross country season and now in the track season as he continues to be the top runner for YS. Not far behind him in every race in the 2013-2014 year has been McLean as he is also having a huge year for the Guins.
Both had breakthrough performances against a solid field today in the 3,000 meters as Rupe led the race from over a half lap ahead of the whole elite field until the last lap where he had crossed the finish line in a very impressive fashion for the win in a time of 8:22.89.
It was a personal best by 13 seconds for Rupe, which is also the third fastest in YSU history. McLean wasn't too far behind Rupe as he finished three seconds back finishing in third place with a time of 8:25. He was one second behind second place finisher Harry Warnick of Villanova. Junior Nick Gliha also competed in the 3000m as he finished with a time of 8:46 to place 15th.
Hamilton has had an incredible career for the Penguins in cross country and track and field, and she continues to have an awesome senior year. She competed in the one mile today and finished in third place with a time of 4:53.41 which ended up breaking the YSU record of 4:56. She was only two seconds behind the winner, Hannah Neczypor from Georgetown.
Horizon League Cross Country Freshman of the Year McKinsie Klim has been a great addition to the YSU cross country/track and field program. McKinsie and her sister, Michelle, competed in the 3000m run as they finished back to back in today's race. McKinsie had a personal best as well today as she finished 18th with a time of 10:19 and Michelle finished 19th with a time of 10:39 in her first ever 3000m run.
