Tampa, Fla. - Youngstown State junior Chad Zallow placed second in his heat and was ninth overall in the 110m hurdles in the first round at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the USF Track and Field Stadium.
Zallow is one of 24 runners who will now compete on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. with a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the line. The top 12 finishers - top three from the three heats and next three fastest times - will advance to the semifinals in Eugene, Oregon. Zallow placed ninth at the last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships earning second-team All-America status.
On Friday, Zallow posted a time of 13.78 seconds (13.779 officially) as part of the third heat. He was second in his heat behind Florida's Grant Holloway (13.61 seconds) and placed ahead of another Gator, Florida's Cory Poole (13.81 seconds) to advance automatically as a finisher in the top three places.
Saturday's competition should be tight with the top 15 runners all going under 13.87 seconds in the first round.
