New Wilmington, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams were finally able to take advantage of some good weather as the Penguins put in an impressive day at the Westminster Invitational on Saturday.
This spring the Penguins had competed in rain at their opening two meets (Florida Relays and Raleigh Relays) and had an event moved indoors because of cold temperatures (Northeast Ohio Quad). YSU was finally able to get outside in warmer temperatures on Saturday as most thermometers in the region registered at least 80 degrees.
Abby Jones highlighted the day by adding to her school record in the high jump. Jones won the high jump with a school-record mark of 1.75m. After clearing 1.73m on her second attempt she eclipsed 1.75m on her third try.
Arnaldo Morales gave the men's team a first-place finish in the high jump clearing a height of 2.14m and was second in the long jump with a leap of 7.04m
In the sprints and hurdles events the Penguins dominated.
YSU's women went one, two, three in the 100m dash. Winning the race was Elliott with a time of 12.07 seconds while Taylor Thompkins was second (12.38) and Keishawnna Burts was third (12.39). In the 200m dash the Guins took the top four spots. Running a first-place time of 24.13 seconds was Elliott while Burts was second (24.63 seconds), Teneisha Myers was third (24.93 seconds) and Thompkins was fourth (25.12 seconds).
Myers won the 400m with a time of 56.81 seconds while Iva Domitrovich was third with a time of 58.27 seconds.
The women won also the 4x100m relay with a time of 45.77 seconds. (Thompkins, Burts, Myers and Elliott)
Eles won the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.79 seconds and she won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.79.
Like the women, the Guins took the top four spots in the men's 200m dash. Chad Zallow won with a time of 21.63 seconds, Carl Zallow was second at 22.02 seconds, Brendon Lucas was third at 22.09 seconds and Josh Beaumont fourth with a time of 22.36 seconds.
YSU had four of the top five finishers in the 100m dash. Winning the race was Chad Zallow with a time of 10.81 seconds while Chad Zallow was second at 11.08 seconds. Placing fourth was Lucas with a time of 11.18 seconds while finishing fifth was Beaumont with a time of 11.23 seconds.
The Guins went 1-2 in the 400m hurdles as Collin Harden led the way with a time of 51.87 seconds. Placing second was Caleb Lloyd running a time of 53.22 seconds. Myron Anderson was third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.30 seconds.
The men won the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.88 seconds (Zallow, Beaumont, Lucas, Zallow)
Guins placed second and third in the 400m as Harden ran a time of 48.65 seconds and Pierlus Stewart ran a 48.76.
Jessica Stever was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.56m. Also in the high jump, Kira Neef was third at 1.60m and Stever was fourth at 1.55m. Angela Lock was third in the javelin with a throw of 36.40m.
Jennifer Muhlenkamp was third in the 1500m run with a time of 5:02.39.
In the team standings, the men won with 167 points while the women took the top spot with 169 points.
