Youngstown State Track and Field Head Coach Brian Gorby announced on Thursday that Chase Stewart has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the YSU Men's and Women's Track and Field program as well as the Cross Country program for the 2019-20 season.
"We are excited to have Chase join our program" said Gorby. "We think he has a high ceiling and will be able to make an impact for us at the Horizon League Championships" said assistant coach Eric Rupe.
Stewart is currently a student-athlete at Shadyside High School in Shadyside, Ohio where he competed in cross country and is currently running track. This past weekend, Stewart won the 1600m run at the historic Bellaire relays with a time of 4:27.40.
This past cross country season, Stewart recorded his second consecutive district championship in the 5000m run after finishing in a time of 16:28.60. Stewart went on to place seventh in the event at the OHSAA Ohio State Cross Country Championship with at time of 16:50.40. His personal-best time in the 5000m run was recorded this season at 16:02.60.
On the track, Stewart qualified for the 2018 OHSAA State Track and Field Championship in the 1600m run and finished 16th with a time of 4:50.24. In 2018, Stewart was finally able to break through in the 1600m run with a first place finish at the OVAC conference championships after posting runner-up finishes in the 2016-2017 seasons. His personal-best time in the 1600m is 4:22.59. Stewart is also a two-time OVAC Conference champion in the 3200m run having won the event in 2016 and 2018. His personal-best time in the event is 9:53.15.
