INDIANAPOLIS - Youngstown State freshman Zach Gehm and sophomore Kaitlyn Merwin have been named the Nike Horizon League Field Athletes of the Week after their performances at last weekend's Ashland Alumni Open, the league announced on Tuesday.
Gehm broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 54.17m on his way to a first place finish in the invitational section of the event. He broke Josh Hacker's 18 year record of 53.37m which was set back on April, 7, 2001.
Gehm enters the final weekend of competition prior to the Horizon League Championships with the league's best throw in the discus by 5.20m.
Merwin won the invitational section of the shot put on Saturday after launching the shot 14.58m on her third attempt. She improved her personal-best mark and now owns the third furthest throw in school history.
Merwin heads into the final weekend with the Horizon League's furthest heave in the shot put and second longest throw in the discus (42.62m).
The Penguins return to the track on Thursday when select runners travel to Philadelphia to compete in the 125th running of the Penn Relays.
