Lefker Breaks School Record as Penguins Compete at Three Meets

The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams were in action on Friday at the Harrison Dillard Twilight, Dr. Keller Invitational and Marty Goldberg Gator Invitational.

The Penguin's day was highlighted by a record breaking performance in the pole vault from freshman Wyatt Lefker at the Harrison Dillard Twilight.

Lefker set the program record in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 5.01m on his second attempt en route to a first place finish in the event. Macklin Rose finished as the runner-up after clearing the bar at 4.66m. 

Abby Jones won the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.70m on her first attempt. Chontel Fils finished third in the triple jump after recording a leap of 11.09m on her final attempt.

Freshman Zach Gehm won the discus with a throw of 51.13m on his final attempt of the afternoon. Nicolette Kreatsoulas won the hammer with a throw of 57.74m.

In the men's shot put, Brandon Orlando finished sixth with a toss of 16.04m. On the women's side, Kaitlyn Merwin finished third with a throw of 13.67m.

Dr. Keller Invitational

Sophomore Sean Peterson was victorious in the 1500m run ahead of 112 competitors with a time of 3:51:08. In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Alan Burns finished with the 11th fastest time overall at 9:15.14 after running in Heat 3.

Marty Goldberg Gator Invitational

In the 400m hurdles, Derek Morrison finished fifth with a time of 59.88 seconds.

Ryan Sullivan finished as the runner-up in the 1500m with a time of 3:57.95 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. Ethan Sparks was sixth with a time of 4:04.75 and James Nedrich was just behind him in seventh with a time of 4:04.85. Mikel Lagaras ran a time of 4:12.00.
