Penguins Head to 125th Penn Relays, Jesse Owens Relays

The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams will be in action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when they compete at the 125th running of the Penn Relays and Jesse Owens Relays on the campus of Ohio State University.

Alan Burns will get the Penguins started on Thursday at the 125th Penn Relays when he runs in the 3000m steeplechase at 7:30 p.m. from Franklin Field. Ryan Sullivan will also compete on Thursday evening for YSU, running in the 5000m which is scheduled to begin at 9:20 p.m.

At last years Penn Relays, Chad Zallow took home a first place finish in the 110m hurdles and Jaliyah Elliott finished sixth in the 100m dash. Zallow and Elliott are both scheduled to run in the preliminaries of their respective events on Friday afternoon. Collin Harden and Suerethia Henderson will also compete for the Guins on Friday in Philadelphia. 

The Jessie Owens Relays gets underway on Friday at 2 p.m. with the men's and women's hammer throw while the running events start at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the shot put and discus throw begin at 10:30 a.m. and the running events kick off at noon. 

The Penguins are coming off an outstanding weekend performance at the Duke Invitational and Ashland Alumni Open which featured a number of first place finishes as well as a record breaking performance from freshman Zach Gehm in the discus throw.

On Tuesday, Gehm was rewarded for his performance by being named the Horizon League's Male Field Athlete of the Week after throwing the disc 54.17m. Sophomore Kaitlyn Merwin was also named the Horizon League's Female Field Athlete of the Week after winning the shot put at Ashland. 

This weekend will be a big for the Guins as they get one final tune-up in before they host the Horizon League Outdoor Championships next weekend at Farmers National Bank Field. 

USTFCCCA Regional Rankings

The men dropped one spot in this week's USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region rankings to 14th after being ranked as high as 11th during the outdoor season. The women dropped two spots in this week's USTFCCA rankings to 17th after being ranked 15th last week.
